Built in 1783, the Brunszvik family were constantly expanding and remodeling their baroque estate, adding neo-Classical and neo-Gothic elements, ultimately creating the lavish, sprawling castle seen today. In the early 19th century, Beethoven visited the estate to teach the Brunsvik girls piano, even though he felt that those who cannot compose, teach. This exception gave him time to compose "Für Elise", and befriend Ferdinand Brunszvik, who would also become his patron.
